My "kamon"(crest of the KATO family) is "maru ni sagari-fuji"(hanging-down-wisteria in a circle).Click the crest, and it will be larger.

The original meaning of the word "KATÔ" is the "TÔ-shi(i.e.Fujiwara clan)" in "KAGA" prefecture.
In 669,the founder of the Fujiwara clan NAKATOMI No KAMATARI(614-669A.D.) was given the surname "Fujiwara" by Emperor Tenji.
The pronunciation of the kanji(Chinese letter) for "Fuji" is "TÔ" in on'yomi(or Chinese reading). So, Fujiwara clan was also sometimes called "TÔ" family.
In conlusion,my name "KATÔ Tôru" means "Toru of the Fujiwara in Kaga prefecture".
However, I have never lived in Kaga.

Hello! My name is KATO(family name), Toru(given name). I am a professor of Meiji University. Born in 1963, male, 173cm high, 83kg(before lunch).
I love accordions.
I specialize in Chinese literature, especially local theatres such as Beijing (Peking) Opera.
Because English is the third language for me(Chinese comes second), this English version of my site is much simpler and poorer than Japanese one. Perhaps you could find some useful and interesting information if you learn Japanese or use some translator software.

My favorite word:天日無私,花枝有序(kanji)
ten jitu mu si, ka si yuu jo(pronunciation)
sky sun no partiality, flower branch have order(word-for-word translation)
Ōmori Zenkai(1871-1947), a famous Zen Buddhist priest in Japan
The sun in the sky shines fairly and impartially.
So,all the blossoms and branches of a tree can grow in perfect order.
Some branches grow in the sun, while others grow in the shadow.
The higher blossoms come out early, while the lower come out later.
They will never hurry nor struggle, because they know the sun is fair and impartiall.
If all of the blossoms, branches struggle toword the sun at the same time, the whole tree could not keep the balance, and it would fall flat on the earth.
The society of human being resembles the tree.
My good fellow, you do not need to hurry. You do not need to lose hope.
Some day your turn will come, so long as the sun shines in the sky.
