Ms. Takei, a 1st year master's student, presented a paper on a new birefringence measurement technique for optical fibers at CLEO2020.

CLEO2020 (Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics), the world's largest international conference on laser and electro-optics, was held from May 11 to 15, 2020. CLEO2020 was scheduled to be held in San Jose, USA, but due to the spread of new coronavirus infection, the entire schedule was held as a virtual conference.
Ms. Takei, a 1st year master's student, submitted a research paper and it was accepted as an oral presentation paper at this conference. In this paper, we have shown that by applying coherent heterodyne detection technology and digital signal processing technology to the method of measuring the backscattered light of an optical fiber, the spatial distribution of the birefringence of the optical fiber can be measured with high resolution. We have proposed it for the first time and have confirmed its validity by theoretical examination and experiments.
We plan to further develop this measurement method in the future.
The online meeting was perfectly prepared, and despite the first virtual conference, it was a meaningful meeting comparable to the face-to-face meetings. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to all the members of the CLEO 2020 management team for preparing to hold the virtual conference promptly despite the sudden change in the world situation.
