Designs and Performance Evaluation of High-rigid Panels /

The scope of this study is focused on "high rigidity" of origami. Core materials such as honeycomb cores are widely used for transport aircrafts, buildings, and so on, to support heavy loads. In our laboratory, we have designed new cylinder-shaped honeycomb cores (Fig. 2) derived from the existing honeycomb cores (Fig. 1), for future application to rotary machines such as vehicle tires and bearings. The new cylindrical honeycomb cores can be fabricated by folding annular sheets to corrugated shapes, gluing and laying them repeatedly. This fabrication process is called corrugated method and also used for the existing flat honeycomb cores. Following the existing method is important for smooth transfer to mass production. So far, we fabricated honeycomb tires using our designs with the same dimension as car tires (Fig. 3), and performed on-vehicle tests to evaluate stiffness and strength of the honeycombs (Fig. 4). It was challenging to support a weight of over 1 ton by 4 paper-made tires, but we calculated appropriate core sizes for high stiffness and strength. Finally, we succeeded in starting, going straight on, and stopping the car. Through this challenge, we demonstrated that devised honeycomb cores could support heavy radial loads even by using soft paper material. A part of this study is introduced on YouTube "Origami Engineering Expands Our Life and Space Technology," National Geographic (published on 27 December, 2020).
