About “Applied Chemistry”

School of Science and Technology in Meiji University is currently composed of nine departments (Electronics and Bioinformatics, Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Informatics, Architecture, Applied Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics). Department of Applied Chemistry is the only department involved in research and education on chemistry.

Message from a chairman

Curriculum which put stress on five basics, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, chemical engineering, and analytic chemistry, is established in the Department of Applied Chemistry, in order to support the future activity in various fields related to materials science. In addition, we have an education goal to achieve the certain acquisition of an experimental technique and the computer usage technique. It is necessary to have "interest and enthusiasm" to work hard at study as an applicant of the applied chemistry department above all. And, I expect the entrance to our department of the student with lively so-called "motivation" to be cheerful, and to be interested in various things, and to work on. In addition, I wish that the students in our department are not only remaining in studies side but also active in extracurricular activities and cooperative to have a wide friend range.

Meaning of Learning Chemistry Now

Chemistry ranges from all life phenomena, including humans, to the elucidation of the mysteries of the constituents of the universe, and its application range is very broad. In addition, high-tech products such as solar cells and liquid crystals cannot be produced without chemistry. Future chemical technology must be able to coexist with the earth. As we enter the 21st century, the meaning of learning chemistry is getting bigger and bigger.

Features of Department Applied Chemistry

Chemistry is one of the most basic academics of natural science together with mathematics and physics. Applied chemistry is the basic science of chemical industry and chemical technology, and further advanced chemical research is required to support the modern chemical industry. Moreover, chemistry is characterized by an extensive academic system that combines both science and engineering. Taking these points into account, Department of Applied Chemistry promotes wide-ranging research and education including physical property, chemical structure, chemical reaction and synthesis. We strive to develop human resources with vision and original ideas from fundamental to applications of chemistry.

Aim of Curriculum

"To train scientists, researchers, and engineers handling from flasks to computers" is the key word in the curriculum and experimental subjects are important. In the "Chemical Information Experiment", which is one of the experimental subjects, various simulation experiments can be carried out using each individual computer so that images of multifaceted chemistry can be acquired. In addition, a wide range of chemical experiments from real to virtual can be experienced by taking "Basic Chemical Experiments 1 and 2" and "Applied Chemistry Experiments 1 to 4".
