Automatic Cross-Sectioning Based on Volume Skeleton Trees

Cross-sectioning is one of the popular methods for visualizing complicated inner structures of a 3D volume dataset. The cross-section is expected to represent the characteristics of the dataset appropriately. However, the traditional way using existing systems is not very efficient since they rely heavily on the user's manual trial-and-error control based on his or her knowledge and experience to find good cross-sections. This talk proposes a method for automatically generating characteristic cross-sections from a given volume dataset. To this end, we take advantage of Volume Skeleton Trees (VSTs), a graph that delineates the topological structure of a 3D volume, for automatically generating cross-sections that well represent the topological characteristics of the dataset.
