The aim of research in this laboratory is to investigate the structure and functions of biological materials and to utilize them for synthesis of innovative materials. We are currently pursuing three main themes directed at this aim. One of them is development of an X-ray microscope for biology. This microscope is an electron microscope based homemade apparatus that can be used to investigate the three-dimensional structure (X-ray micro-CT) of biological specimens. Another project addresses the synthesis of nanoparticles utilizing protein. Usually, we use the protein “ferritin”, which has a 7 nm diameter cavity inside that we utilize as a nano-scale reaction chamber. Ferritin accumulates metal ions into its cavity and mineralizes metal compounds as a nano-scale crystal (see figure). We are also investigating the mechanical properties of bacterial flagella, which have many characteristics that cannot be fabricated artificially.
