Connecting the World and Japan

Dear prospective students,

The School of Global Japanese Studies of Meiji University aims to develop your competence of connecting the World and Japan. Nowadays there are many universities and schools where international students can acquire the knowledge of Japanese culture and society, but we believe that it is important to enable you to connect the World and Japan based on that knowledge.

There are many Japanese students in our School. They want to connect the World and Japan as well. We do not separate international and Japanese students in principle. You study various courses taught in English or in Japanese, together with Japanese students with the same purpose as yours.

International students account for 20% of the regular students of our School today. In addition, many exchanges students come to us every year. They are not only from Asian neighborhood, but also from all over the world.

Classes

授業紹介

Japanese classes for Japanese-language learners

In the School of Global Japanese Studies, first-year students will learn the four skills of Japanese (reading, listening, writing and speaking) essential for studying in a university, or Japanese as general knowledge. In the second year, "Integrated Japanese" which uses the four-skills comprehensively to build Japanese, and "Introduction to Advanced Academic Japanese" in which students learn about basic concepts of the eight specialized areas of the School of Global Japanese Studies.

English classes for English-language learners

The School of Global Japanese Studies provides a variety of classes to enhance academic English. In the first year, students will improve the ability to "speak," "listen," "read/write." Second-year students will learn how to write lengthy reports, and how to make effective presentations. Furthermore, many elective classes will provide opportunities to boost the ability of English as well as critical thinking. These opportunities will help students prepare themselves for problems they may face in situations including study abroad. We aim for students to become confident in using the language, and to be able to communicate effectively with both written and spoken English.

Practicum in Global Japanese Studies

In the Practicum in Global Japanese Studies, students can learn through various experiences such as field work or projects which collaborate with the local community. For example, in "Practicum in Global Japanese Studies C" (by Associate Professor. Kishi Makiko), students set a theme and use various Information and Communication Technology ("ICT") in a project-based program. Projects in the past include AY2013: an intercultural project with Yamagata University promoting Japan which developed a collaborative relationship between the distant cities; AY2014: intercultural exchange practice with students in Senegal; AY 2015: video production utilizing robot (Pepper); AY2016: practices utilizing avatar robots.

Seminar Activities

The School of Global Japanese Studies offers a wide variety of seminar classes to choose. In a seminar, students in small groups of approximately 10 to 20 research a specific theme for two years in their third and fourth year. For instance, in the Yamawaki seminar, students research multi-cultural co-existence, using Nakano district and the Tokyo metropolitan area as the field. These activities include an annual discussion in late-June, between the international students of the SGJS and the Mayor of Nakano City, where they discuss how to make Nakano more globalized. In early-December, the Mayor is invited to see the seminar presentation of research results on multi-cultural co-existence and rediscuss the topic. The Yamawaki seminar also collaborates with Tokyo Prefecture and holds a joint presentation contest on this theme with four other universities, Chuo University, Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, Hosei University, and Waseda University.

GJSS Committee students will be your first friends in Japan. We will study, travel, and hold community events with international students from throughout the globe. Four years is very limited time, but we would like to make the best of it together with you.

CASE02Collaboration with the Community

In the School of Japanese studies, students discover Japan in and out of the campus. There are many opportunities to communicate with people in Nakano and other various communities in Japan. For instance, students can take part in intercultural activities with Japanese elementary and junior high school students. We also exchange opinions with Nakano City about community development and host events about this topic.
CASE03Distant cross-cultural exchange

There are classes and other opportunities, where students use ICT to have intercultural exchanges with people in Japan and throughout the world. For instance, English discussions using electronic television meetings, and distant-learning seminars using robots are available. Connect to the world with ICT at the School of Global Studies.

We will hold a special school information session for foreign students. In this session we will talk about general information, features of the curriculum, admission, career possibilities after graduation, and so on. In addition, you may be able to talk directly to foreign students in this school.
